Palliative Care

Facing an advanced illness often leads to increased stress for patients and their families. The Palliative Care Service at Barnes-Jewish Hospital is available to help patients address such issues as pain, symptom management and quality of life. Assistance also is provided to families and caregivers.

The Palliative Care Service is a collaborative effort between Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine and BJC Hospice. Launched in September 2005, it is the first comprehensive hospital-based palliative care program in Missouri. The service provides pain and symptom management and improves quality of life issues for those patients with potentially life-limiting illnesses.

Mission Statement
To improve quality of life care and symptom management for patients and families with a potentially life-limiting diagnosis through specialized, interdisciplinary clinical care, education and research.

Vision
Barnes-Jewish Hospital will be the place where patients will want to receive their care and care-givers will want to provide care due to our unique blend of the best science of medicine and excellent quality of life care.

Beliefs
We believe that treating the whole person is as important as treating the disease itself. We believe in the value of choice, and assist patients, their families and caregivers in making choices that affect their lives. We value quality of life and focus on goals of care for each individual we serve.
