Leader in innovation

The vision at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, along with our academic partner Washington University School of Medicine, is to be the best academic medical center in the country. Realizing this vision requires we push the limits of innovation:

  • The Kling Center for Proton Therapy at the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine will allow doctors to use protons to target tumors with greater precision. Delivery of this system will begin in the fall of 2009.
  • Intraoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) debuted at Barnes-Jewish Hospital in 2008. This is the world’s most advanced imaging technology, enabling neurosurgeons to perform important MRI tests while surgery is in progress.
  • Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine are among 15 sites in the United States participating in the nationwide PARTNER (Placement of Aortic Transcatheter valves) trial. This procedure enables surgeons to replace the heart’s aortic valve via needle-puncture of the skin rather than requiring a more invasive surgery.

Community service

Whether it’s offering mentorship programs for transplant patients, teaching teens how to be good parents or providing medical care free of charge, Barnes-Jewish Hospital’s outreach and charity care have a profound impact on the communities we serve. In 2008, we dispensed 30,000 free flu vaccinations, facilitated 157 educational programs and provided over $23 million in charity care.

In addition, we encourage and foster an environment where our employees get directly involved in the community. From mentoring high school students to offering free medical screenings in homeless shelters, our employees take pride in taking their skills to those who need it most.
