Spine Surgery

When patients have symptoms of spine disorder or injury, conservative management typically is the best first approach. When medication or physical therapy isn’t enough, Barnes-Jewish & Washington University Spine Center neurosurgeons and orthopedic surgeons can determine if surgery is appropriate.

Our surgeons specialize in complex reconstructive procedures, innovative treatments and proven rehabilitation techniques to offer the best chance at pain relief and regaining function. Together, our orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons have one of the largest clinical practices in the United States, including the largest practice for the surgical management of adult and pediatric spinal deformities and complex reconstructions.

Each year, Spine Center surgeons evaluate approximately 3,000 new patients and perform nearly 1,400 spinal surgeries.  The clinical care and research is of such a high standard that patients—including spine surgeons from other medical centers—come from all 50 states and from countries outside the U.S. Additionally, medical centers from around the world have sought the expertise of surgeons from the Spine Center.

If spine surgery is needed, patients are referred to one of eight surgeons specializing in spinal disorders and conditions, including:

Surgeons follow each surgery patient’s progress through their entire treatment, from the detailed initial evaluation to the spine rehabilitation process.

Barnes-Jewish, along with our Washington University orthopedic physician partners, have designed a Spine Journey Guide to prepare patients for what to expect before, during and after spine surgery. Each of our spinal surgery patients receive this journey guide and are encouraged to complete all recommendations to achieve the best outcomes.
