Liver Transplant Support Group

LIVER TRANSPLANT SUPPORT GROUP

The Liver Transplant Support Group at Barnes-Jewish Hospital is designed to offer support and education to liver transplant recipients, candidates, caregivers and family members. By providing a forum for sharing information and experiences, the support group helps patients and those close to them better understand and cope with the issues and concerns associated with liver transplant.

Liver Transplant Support Group meetings provide members with emotional support and helpful information from others who understand because liver transplants are a part of their lives, too. Because the group is a mix of people in various stages of the transplant process, members learn firsthand accurate information about what they can expect.

Together, group leaders, members and guest speakers explore the physical and emotional concerns that accompany liver transplant. The information discussions are designed to touch upon the individual needs of each patient and his or her family. Some common topics you'll find discussed at meetings include:

  • The transplant process
  • Lifestyle changes caused by transplant
  • Financial concerns associated with transplant
  • Side effects of medications
  • Fear of organ rejection

Pre-transplant patients welcome! Meet people who know what you are going through, and where you are going.

Family and friends are welcome.

TRANSPLANT MENTOR PROGRAM

The Transplant Mentor Program at Barnes-Jewish Hospital is a valuable and unique program designed to provide information, guidance and emotional support to those involved in the transplant process. The mentors are patients who have already successfully gone through transplant. They can provide a great source of encouragement and understanding for new patients.

The confidential Transplant Mentor Program offers a network of peers that helps those experiencing the process to overcome the sense of being alone, and encourages them to stay active before and after transplant. Mentors can provide firsthand knowledge of the process, plus information about matters such as places to stay while in St. Louis for transplant, how to work with the transplant team, and their own experience with certain medications.
