Get a look at how doctors save lives in one of the nation’s busiest and most advanced emergency rooms at “Trauma: Life in the Emergency Room,” a free event at 7 p.m., March 10 at the Holiday Inn South County, 6921 Lindbergh Blvd. The event also will feature a live demonstration of alcohol breathalyzer testing and a special safety program for children.

Attendees at the event will be eligible for a chance to spend the day shadowing a Washington University emergency physician in the Barnes-Jewish Hospital emergency department.

The event features Washington University trauma surgeon Douglas Schuerer, MD, discussing real trauma case studies from the Barnes-Jewish Hospital emergency department and physicians David Carpenter, MD, and Richard Bach, MD, discussing how rapid treatment of stroke and heart attack is saving lives.

They’ll also discuss Missouri’s new Time Critical Diagnosis Law, the first in the country to treat heart attack and stroke patients like trauma patients. The new law requires emergency medical services (EMS) to transport these patients to highly prepared, specialized centers, such as Barnes-Jewish.

Throughout the event, Dr. Schuerer will test a subject with a breathalyzer to demonstrate how much and how quickly alcohol enters the blood.

A special program called Thinkfirst, will be offered for children ages 10 - 18 by Barnes Jewish Trauma Service, home of the St. Louis Chapter of ThinkFirst. This program is designed to promote brain and spinal cord injury prevention awareness, and covers vehicle, water, bicycle, sports and recreation safety.

The Barnes-Jewish Hospital emergency department has 61 beds and sees more than 80,000 patients each year. It was the first hospital in Missouri to be certified as a level 1 trauma center by the American College of Surgeons.

Although the event is free, registration is required. To register for the event, call 314-TOP-DOCS (867-3627) or toll-free 866-867-3627, or go to www.barnesjewish.org
