ST. LOUIS –  Barnes-Jewish Hospital and its physician partners at Washington University School of Medicine are once again listed among the nation’s elite medical centers in U.S. News & World Report’s annual list of “Best Hospitals,” ranking No. 10 in the nation and are again ranked No. 1 in both Missouri and the St. Louis metro area.

“This recognition is a direct reflection of the hard work and dedication of our Washington University physicians, our nurses and each member of the Barnes-Jewish team. For 23 consecutive years, we have been named to the Honor Roll – once again, we are proud to belong to this prestigious group,” says Bob Cannon, Barnes-Jewish Hospital president.

For the 23rd straight year, Barnes-Jewish earned honors as part of the newsmagazine’s “Honor Roll.” This year’s Honor Roll highlights 15 hospitals out of nearly 5,000 nationwide for their expertise in treating the most challenging patients across a range of medical specialties.

“Fewer than 150 hospitals – less than 3 percent of the nearly 5,000 we evaluated – were nationally ranked in even one specialty, let alone six,” said Ben Harder, chief of health analysis at U.S. News. “An Honor Roll hospital has much to be proud of.”

Barnes-Jewish was ranked nationally in 14 of the 16 specialties. The rankings have been published at http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals and will appear in print in the U.S. News “Best Hospitals 2016” guidebook, available in August.

The following Barnes-Jewish/Washington University clinical specialties ranked among the top 50 nationwide:

#8 Pulmonology

#10 Nephrology

#11 Neurology & Neurosurgery

#11 Urology

#12 Ear, Nose & Throat

#13 Diabetes & Endocrinology

#13 Ophthalmology

#14 Cancer

#14 Cardiology & Heart Surgery

#15 Rheumatology

#17 Gynecology

#17 Orthopedics

#19 Geriatrics

#20 Gastroenterology & GI Surgery

The methodology U.S. News uses to rank 12 of 16 specialties is based on a mathematical model combining reputation, mortality rate, patient safety, and care-related factors such as nursing and patient services. Four remaining specialties – ophthalmology, psychiatry, rehabilitation, and rheumatology – are ranked solely based on their reputation among specialists nationwide.
