RENEWING OUR CAMPUS TO IMPROVE SERVICE, QUALITY

Overview

The Campus Renewal Project on the medical center campus will consist of new construction and renovations with an overall focus on improving the patient and family experience from both a clinical and campus perspective. In 2013, the first phase of the project began with the abatement and demolition of the former Jewish Hospital and the Jewish Hospital School of Nursing along Kingshighway Boulevard. When this phase of the project ends, Barnes-Jewish Hospital will have a new inpatient tower to consolidate obstetrics and gynecological services, expanded clinical care at the Siteman Cancer Center,

expand other surgical programs and create new space for diagnostics and treatment. St. Louis Children's Hospital will have an increased number of private beds with expanded diagnostics and treatments services, outpatient clinics and support services. The second phase of the project will include a new inpatient tower for Barnes-Jewish Hospital’s expansion of the heart and vascular, neurology and neurosurgery, transplant, trauma and critical care, and general medicine programs.

Timeline

  • March 2012 – Campus Renewal Project announced to BJC employees
  • April 2012 – Employee committee formed to document and preserve heritage of The Jewish Hospital of St. Louis
  • July 2012 – HOK named executive architect
  • August 2012 – ACW Alliance named chief construction manager; Jacobs joins the team as program manager
  • September 2012 – Diversity consultant Marks and Associates joins the project
  • October 2012 – Chief engineer BR+A is added to the team
  • March 2013 – Preliminary rendering and project scope presented to St. Louis Preservation Board – a precursor to demolition
  • May 2013 – Jewish Hospital celebration
  • June 2013 – Concept design finalized, the first major project milestone for North Campus development; started schematic design
  • July 2013 – Started interior abatement and demolition of former Jewish Hospital School of Nursing, and Kingshighway, Yalem and Steinberg buildings
  • August 2013 – Construction barriers erected
  • November 2013 – Structural demolition of Jewish Hospital School of Nursing started
  • January 2014 – Completed schematic design; started design development
  • January 2014 – Structural demolition of the Kingshighway Building started
  • October 2014 – Scheduled groundbreaking to begin new construction
