Your Gifts at Work

Gifts to The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital make possible lifesaving research; medical education and scholarships; patient care and support; and community outreach for better health and wellness for St. Louis and beyond. The Foundation supports Barnes-Jewish Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine, the Siteman Cancer Center, Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College, and Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital.

Thank you for your continued support. When you give to The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital, you give where care matters most.

2013 Support Awarded

Research — $10,431,807

Gifts like yours supported more than 110 vital research projects across a broad spectrum of disciplines such as cancer, heart disease, diabetes and more. For example, recent heart research has led to important findings about aortic stenosis, a condition where the valve that controls blood flow out of the heart becomes calcified and narrow, impeding blood flow. This research may lead to drug therapies that significantly delay the onset of aortic stenosis, improve outcomes after valve replacement surgery, and provide an overall change in how patients with aortic stenosis are treated.

In addition, cancer researchers have made significant progress in developing a personalized vaccine that activates the patient’s own immune system to fight melanoma, an often deadly form of skin cancer that has a tendency to spread to other organs.

Education & Scholarships — $3,199,399

Our donors support continuing education for physicians, nurses, pharmacists and other health care professionals. In addition, gifts like yours support nursing scholarships at Goldfarb School of Nursing. In 2013, the Foundation awarded $450,000 in scholarships to 171 nursing students to meet the evolving health care needs of our community.

Patient Care & Support — $1,933,015

In 2013, gifts like yours assisted patients in financial need with medications, transportation costs, medical equipment, home health visits and more, so patients could safely manage treatments in their familiar home environments. In addition, gifts support the Arts + Healthcare program, which touches thousands of patients, their caregivers and family members, as well as hospital staff. Whether painting, stamping, weaving, writing, listening to music or just talking with others, these creative outlets help people find strength and comfort in the midst of stress, sorrow or pain.

Community Outreach — $1,184,738

Your gifts funded more than 31,000 flu shots for the community to fight a strain of flu that struck a disproportionate number of younger patients in 2013. Gifts also support Barnard Health and Cancer Information Center. In 2013, this center helped more than 4,200 cancer patients and families have access to information, support groups, free wigs and turbans, breast prostheses, books, nutritional supplements and more. This was particularly beneficial to low-income or underinsured patients to help ease their journey through cancer.
