BUILDING EXCELLENCE

It is hard to walk the halls of Barnes-Jewish Hospital and not be inspired. Every day, our 9,000+ employees, along with our physician partners at Washington University School of Medicine, work together in the relentless pursuit of breakthroughs as national leaders in medicine. With a focus on the patients we serve, we recommit ourselves each and every day to making medicine better by creating unique ways to improve the care and services we provide to the St. Louis community, the Midwest and across the nation.

One of the reasons we’re able to continue improving care and service to our community is because of support from The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital. Donations to the Foundation allow us to pursue breakthrough research that leads to new treatments for a variety of diseases. Gifts to the Foundation also support scholarships for students at Goldfarb School of Nursing and help patients in need pay for essential medications, medical equipment and more, so they can stay healthier in our community. This generosity is more important today than ever in the changing face of health care.

Within this Report to the Community, you'll have the opportunity to read about some of our innovative treatments, community programs, our focus on the patient experience, and improvements to our facilities.

In 2013, we made significant gains in our efforts to improve our performance on safety, quality and patient experience measures. At the same time, we stayed faithful to improving community access to our physicians and unique programs by expanding our presence in south St. Louis County with the Siteman Cancer Center's new location and by advancing our multi-year campus renewal project on the Washington University Medical Center campus.

As part of BJC HealthCare, Barnes-Jewish Hospital is helping to lead the way in efforts to examine how we can deliver quality, growth, savings and effectiveness, while keeping the patient at the center of everything we do.

Through the BJC Collaborative we are partnering with six health care systems across Missouri and southern Illinois to share best practices, create efficiencies, and position ourselves to better manage the care of large groups of patients in their communities.

For patients admitted to our hospital, we’re discovering unique ways to improve care and significantly reduce the chances a patient will have to return to the hospital. For instance, we recognize that some of the patients we discharge have trouble obtaining the medications that support their continued recovery. Now, instead of sending a patient home with a handful of prescriptions to fill, our innovative mobile pharmacy program ensures they have their medications in hand before they leave the hospital so their recovery can continue uninterrupted. For patients who don't have an established relationship with a primary care physician, our Stay Healthy Clinic ensures they will receive follow-up care through a series of post-discharge clinical visits.

While we’re well known for our ability to treat highly complex medical conditions, we've placed renewed emphasis on the total patient experience. We are committed to ensuring your entire experience with us is excellent, whether during an inpatient stay or an outpatient visit. By working to ensure that our care teams do an even better job communicating with each other about a patient's care and by being more responsive to patient needs, we are continually improving our performance in this area. In fact, a fourth of our nursing units and outpatient services ranked among the top 25 percent of hospitals in the nation for patient satisfaction in 2013. In addition to being the right thing to do, ensuring an excellent patient experience also aligns with our ICARE values—integrity, compassion, accountability, respect and excellence.

Being a national leader in medicine also requires us to lead by adopting innovative treatments. Our S. Lee Kling Proton Therapy Center is the first system of its kind. Proton beam therapy delivers a more precise dosage of treatment radiation to cancer patients, greatly reducing damage to surrounding tissues that can occur in other forms of radiation treatment. Within this report you’ll also learn about other clinical advances, such as the heart-assist device we implanted in patients like Tracy Chambers. Or how we successfully removed a difficult brain tumor in an experienced triathlete—Brad Eastman.

We’re also working to uphold our national leader status by renewing our facilities. In 2013 we embarked on a multi-year project to replace aging inpatient buildings on our campus. In addition to structural improvements, the project will enhance our ability to provide cutting-edge care for our patients undergoing treatments for cancer, and will enhance services to women and newborns. Working in partnership with our BJC HealthCare partner, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, we have dedicated a portion of this project to providing unparalleled care for birthing mothers and their healthy and critically ill newborn children.

Improving the health of a community is no small undertaking. Again, it is only through the dedication of our Barnes-Jewish team members, our Washington University physicians and our generous donors that we are able to make medicine better.

Thank you for taking the time to view our Report to the Community. We're always interested to hear your feedback about our progress and the care we provide. You can drop us a note at AskRich@bjc.org. We would love to hear from you.
