Heart Transplant Outcomes

Despite taking on some of the most challenging cases – patients who may have been turned down for transplant at other centers – the heart transplant program at Barnes-Jewish Hospital has achieved very strong survival rates.

Patients who undergo successful heart transplantation generally report improved exercise tolerance and quality of life. Patient survival following heart transplantation is approximately 90 percent at 1 year, 75 percent at 5 years and 50 percent at 12 years. The outcomes of patients transplanted at Barnes-Jewish Hospital are in line with these national benchmarks. Long-term success exceeding 25 years of survival is possible.

Excellent outcomes achieved by our team are a result of:

  • selection of the most appropriate transplant candidates
  • world-renowned medical and surgical transplant specialists
  • expertise in caring for heart failure and heart transplant patients
  • rigorous pursuit of leading-edge therapies and promising new drugs
  • availability of advanced expertise in nearly every specialty

Harrison Black

In fall of 2001, Harrison Black struggled to breathe, lost weight and felt miserable. Doctors told him that a virus had damaged his heart and he would need a heart transplant. After 11 months of rehab, Black went on the heart transplant waiting list. Just two weeks later, he was on the operating table at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, getting his donor heart. Today, Black is stronger than ever, thanks to his heart transplant.
