Heart Transplant Outcomes

Despite taking on some of the most challenging cases – patients who may have been turned down for transplant at other centers – the heart transplant program at Barnes-Jewish Hospital has achieved very strong survival rates.

Patients who undergo successful heart transplantation generally report improved exercise tolerance and quality of life. Patient survival following heart transplantation is approximately 90 percent at 1 year, 75 percent at 5 years and 50 percent at 12 years. The outcomes of patients transplanted at Barnes-Jewish Hospital are in line with these national benchmarks. Long-term success exceeding 25 years of survival is possible.
