New Radiation Therapy Technology

ViewRay

Researchers at the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine are the first anywhere to evaluate a new radiation therapy system designed to provide continuous magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) during treatment. This feature allows clinicians to see precisely where the radiation is being delivered in real time, potentially improving treatment success and reducing side effects.

The new technology, called ViewRay, will soon be available for patient treatment. “Once this system is approved for treating patients, we can use the better visualization it offers to plan more tailored radiation treatments,” says Parag Parikh, MD, a Washington University radiation oncologist at the Siteman Cancer Center.
