Pancreas Transplant

At the Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Transplant Center, we know the possibility of having a pancreas transplant can be overwhelming. However, our highly skilled transplant providers including surgeons, nephrologists, pharmacists, nurses and other transplant specialists ensure that you receive a personalized, comprehensive treatment plan.

Our pancreas transplant program is the largest in the state of Missouri and has a proven track record of providing excellent outcomes for our patients. Moreover, our approach to care gives you the physical and emotional support you need throughout the transplant process.

Pancreas Transplant at Barnes-Jewish: Why Choose Us?

Our center has performed close to 200 pancreas transplants since the program’s inception. Research shows that centers with strong transplant volumes like ours have better outcomes than programs that perform fewer transplants each year. Our depth of experience also allows us to provide several pancreas transplant options, depending on your medical condition.

Our program offers:

  • Care for type 1 diabetes patients: Our transplant surgeons and nephrologists have extensive expertise performing and managing pancreas transplants in patients with type 1 diabetes. In these carefully evaluated patients, a successful pancreas transplant can offer many patients a fuller and longer life. Learn more about pancreas transplant for diabetes.
  • Excellent outcomes: Our pancreas transplant outcomes consistently meet or exceed national averages.
  • Innovative organ acquisition: We work closely with an organ procurement organization (OPO), Mid-America Transplant, to streamline pancreas transplantation. This OPO’s unique practices help the donor pancreas work better, sooner after transplant surgery.
  • Team approach to care: Our dedicated transplant nurse coordinators, social workers, psychologists, pharmacists, surgeons and nephrologists provide team-based, comprehensive care throughout the transplant process. This care provides a seamless experience for our patients and helps to reduce the risk of infection.
  • Research and innovation: Our partnership with Washington University School of Medicine means we are actively involved in pancreas transplant research. This dedication to research gives our patients access to the latest innovations in pancreas transplant care.
  • Patient and family support: You and your loved ones can readily access education, support groups, one-on-one psychological counseling and our Transplant Mentor Program. In this program, someone who has already had a transplant provides you with information, guidance and emotional support.
