Lung Disease Treatment in West County

When diseases of the lungs, esophagus or trachea affect you or someone you love, Barnes-Jewish Hospital now provides access to lung experts in West St. Louis County as well as downtown.

The Washington University pulmonary/thoracic program has expanded its facilities to include a new satellite office at Barnes-Jewish West County Hospital.

The program - consistently ranked among the best in the nation by U.S. News & World Report - offers comprehensive evaluation, diagnosis and management of a variety of surgical diseases of the lung, esophagus, mediastinum and chest wall.

At the satellite office, patients can receive pre- and post-operative care. Procedures performed at the new location include:
  • Bronchoscopy and airway intervention
  • Mediastinoscopy
  • Minimally invasive thoracoscopy
  • Transcervical thymectomy
  • Pleurex catheter placement
  • Esophagoscopy
  • Laparoscopic fundoplication

"In the past, all of our patients have received pre- and postoperative care at the Jacqueline Maritz Lung Center in the Center for Advanced Medicine," said G. Alexander Patterson, MD, chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and the Section of General Thoracic Surgery. "The satellite office allows us to offer patients the same comprehensive care we provide at our main campus without requiring them to travel so far."

In addition to Patterson, thoracic surgeons at the new office are Richard Battafarano, MD, PhD; Daniel Kreisel, MD, PhD; and Bryan Meyers, MD. The practice also includes Washington University interventional pulmonologist Martin Mayse, MD, and nurse practitioner Nancy Bourgeois, RN, NP-C.

In addition to excellent care, the new office features an increased cancer focus through collaboration with the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center and on-site consultations with Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology chest radiologists.
