Spring Cleaning Tips
Several different types of mold exist in homes. But you don''t have to be a biologist to identify the mold you have — it''s all treated the same. Put bleach water (one cup bleach with one gallon water) in your cleaning arsenal to wipe out visible surface mold.

Dr. Kulczycki also recommends:

  • Fix leaks immediately.
  • Toss toys, boxes and clothes that have gotten wet – they grow mold easily.
  • If your home has flooded, call a professional company that does mold remediation.
  • When using chemicals to clean, keep the windows open.

How to Prevent Mold
(from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention)

  • Use an air conditioner or a dehumidifier during humid months
  • Be sure you have adequate ventilation, such as exhaust fans in the kitchen and bathrooms
  • Use mold inhibitors, which can be added to paints
  • Clean bathrooms with mold-killing products
  • Do not carpet bathrooms
  • Remove and replace flooded carpets
