Spinal Trauma

Spinal cord injury is damage to the spinal cord that can interfere with how messages travel back and forth between the brain and the rest of the body. An injury to the spine or spinal cord can result in complete or partial loss of movement (paralysis) and feeling and complete or partial loss of bladder and bowel function.

Orthopedic surgeons and neurosurgeons at the Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Spine Center specialize in treating spinal fractures and other spine trauma.

As the largest regional trauma center, Barnes-Jewish Hospital and the Washington University neurosurgeons and orthopedic spine surgeons are able to provide world-class care to patients with spinal trauma--from the emergency department to the operating rooms and intensive care units, to specialized spinal rehabilitation at the Rehabilitation Institute of St. Louis.
