Bariatric Surgery

A unique Bariatric Surgery Program for treating extreme weight gain is available at the Washington University Bariatric “Weight Loss” Surgery Program in conjunction with Barnes-Jewish Hospital. The program provides expert surgical therapy and dietary consultation, behavior modification, physical exercise, and patient support groups to achieve the best possible success.

In order to qualify for Bariatric surgery you must:

  • Be between the ages of 18-70
  • Have a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater, or a BMI of 35 or greater if you have diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure or sleep apnea; or a BMI of 30 or greater for laparoscopic gastric banding surgery
  • Have attempted a structured dietary weight loss program without success
  • Be evaluated and approved by a behavioral therapist, a dietician, and physical therapist
  • You will also be required to have labs and EKG to evaluate your general condition


To pursue Bariatric surgery at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, a pre-surgical initial screening must be completed.  Initial screening can be obtained by clicking on “Initial Screening” at www.weightlosssurgery.wustl.edu. The pre-surgical evaluation is a thorough process that requires significant patient involvement:

  • Seminar Attendance
  • Nurse Practitioner Evaluation
  • Behavioral Evaluation
  • Dietician Evaluation
  • Physical Therapy Evaluation
  • Surgeon Evaluation
  • Pre and Post Surgery Support Groups (check out our web-site for dates and time)


The following types of Bariatric “weight loss” surgery procedures are provided:

  • Laparoscopic Gastric Bypass
  • Laparoscopic Gastric Banding
  • Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
