The Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital Stroke & Cerebrovascular Center is the first in Missouri to achieve Comprehensive Stroke Center certification. The Joint Commission and the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association certify Comprehensive Stroke Centers as industry leaders responsible for setting the national agenda in highly-specialized stroke care.

When it comes to stroke, minutes matter. The brain is at risk from the moment the first symptoms strike, and every second that passes reduces the likelihood of a full recovery.

With a sold-out crowd topping 600 guests, The Foundation for Barnes-Jewish Hospital’s annual illumination Gala raised nearly $1.8 million for cancer research at the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine. The event was held April 20, 2013, at The Ritz-Carlton, St. Louis.

It’s one of the most common heart arrhythmias. But while the symptoms for atrial fibrillation (AFIB) vary, many with the abnormal heart rhythm have one thing in common – a greater chance of having a stroke.

Now, a new non-invasive procedure at the Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Heart & Vascular Center aims to decrease that risk and the need for patients to be on blood thinning medications. It focuses on a part of the heart called the left atrial appendage. 

Barnes-Jewish Hospital has once again achieved the highest recognition of nursing excellence – an honor held by only eight hospitals in Missouri. The hospital’s nursing leadership recently received word from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) that Barnes-Jewish was granted Magnet® redesignation for four more years.
