Maria Dans, MD, is the new director of palliative care at Barnes-Jewish Hopsital. Dr. Dans is an assistant professor of hospital medicine at Washington University School of Medicine.
“Our purpose is to help people clarify their goals, whether that is to stop coughing, to see a child graduate or to attend a family gathering,” Dans says.
“We translate that into the plan of care so that patients and their families can have a better quality of life.”
“We can also be called in for a consult at any point in the treatment plan,” she says. “But the more time we have, the more we can help. By building relations, we can provide better care.”
After earning her medical degree in 1999 from Washington University School of Medicine, Dr. Dans completes her internal medicine residency, palliative medicine and critical care fellowships at Stanford University School of Medicine.
