We Can't Do It Without Volunteers

Most people don't choose to spend time in a hospital. But the volunteers at Barnes-Jewish Hospital choose to spend time making a difference in the lives of our employees, patients and visitors. Everyone whose lives they touch truly appreciates their efforts.

During the course of a year, Barnes-Jewish has more than 800 volunteers ranging from high school and college students to the volunteers with more than 20 years of service.

"I have volunteered at Barnes-Jewish for 19 years because I enjoy seeing the patients and meeting people," says Joe Hemphill. Hemphill sorts and delivers magazines to patients.

Barnes-Jewish Hospital celebrates our volunteers all year long, but the hospital is making a special effort this week to recognize this special group of people letting them know how grateful we are they are working beside us to improve the health of this community by taking exceptional care of people.

"We treasure our volunteers for their dedication, dependability and the wide variety of services they perform for the hospital, patients and their families," says Nancee Bloom, volunteer coordinator.

With the size and location of Barnes-Jewish Hospital, our volunteers clearly choose to work at Barnes-Jewish because they value want to be part of what we accomplish at the hospital each and everyday. Many of our volunteers have hospitals much closer to their homes, but make the choice to be here.

The volunteers have given the hospital more than 80,000 hours of service in the past year. They escort patients, answer phones, deliver flowers, provide spiritual comfort, assist with research projects, serve on boards, fundraise and act as our advocates in the community.

"We truly appreciate everything our volunteers do. We want to make them feel as special as they make us feel every time they are at the hospital. They make a difference no one else can," says Cindy Fishman, volunteer coordinator.

And that is what volunteering is all about.
