Residency Program

All care in the emergency department is overseen by faculty (attending) physicians who are present 24/7. As a teaching hospital, the faculty also work with:

  • Senior medical students

  • Resident physicians (young graduate doctors doing specialty training)

  • Fellows (physicians who are already specialists in Emergency Medicine and are doing subspecialty training).

The 4-year Emergency Medicine training program (residency) started in 1997 and has graduated over 150 specialists, who now practice in 39 states and 4 countries. Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital sponsor the Emergency Medicine training program, which leads to board certification in emergency medicine. Applicants must have finished medical school in good standing and be eligible for temporary licensing in the state of Missouri.

emergency department residency program

The Washington University Emergency Medicine department sponsors fellowships in Ultrasound, Toxicology, Prehospital care, Education, and - in conjunction with other departments - pediatric emergency medicine and critical care.

Critical Care
This educational track for our trainees focuses on the nuances of critical care medicine, providing a clinical based Trauma Critical Care (TCC) unit in our Emergency Department.

EMS
Washington University EMS is Missouri's first and only physician-based, licensed Emergency Medical Response Agency (EMRA).

Pediatric
We have a robust fellowship program, which is one of only two fellowships in Pediatric Emergency Medicine to be supported by an NIH training grant. There is also a new Fellowship Program in Child Abuse Pediatrics.

Simulation
emergency department residency programOur recently built Sim Lab houses four high fidelity METI mannequins as well as a task training room. For most residents the simulation training is their first time taking care of a "patient" with no attending supervision or other residents to lean on.

Toxicology
Our subspecialty is dedicated to the most up-to-date training in the management of poisoning and overdoses. Our residents are available for bedside consults for all toxicological emergencies and staff each patient with the on-call attending.

Ultrasound
We emphasize a curriculum that demands all residents become proficient in ultrasound guided venous cannulation, eFAST, AAA, pregnant female patient, and cardiac.
