Ride Your Bike to Fund Cancer Research

Give To President's Fund

Issac Butler, PharmD, MBA of Express Scripts, future pharmacist Terrence Harris, and Steven Player, PharmD, MBA of Barnes-Jewish Hospital of the BESt Summer Pharmacy Institute
The Barnes-Jewish Hospital Foundation President’s Fund represents gifts that are not restricted to a particular need.

Your gift to the President’s Fund gives Barnes-Jewish Hospital the flexibility to fulfill extraordinary opportunities to advance our national leadership and to make life better in our community.  Funding from the President’s Fund may support important programs that

  • Lead to a medical breakthrough.
  • Prepare students to be tomorrow’s best physicians, nurses, or pharmacists.
  • Change hospital culture to improve outcomes for all we serve.
  • Develop or acquire leading edge technology that brings new hope to our patients.
  • Enable us to fight a critical public health problem.
Gifts to the President’s Fund are our most precious resource for innovation in healthcare.

Recent Projects Supported by Gifts to the President’s Fund of Barnes-Jewish Hospital Foundation:

Surgical Robotics

The Barnes-Jewish Hospital Department of Surgery was able to purchase the robotic daVinci Surgical System in May 2007.  This technology combines 3-D visualization with enhanced dexterity and precision, enabling minimally invasive approaches to complex surgical procedures such as complete or partial removal of the prostate, bladder or kidney and gynecological surgery.

Our surgeons confirm that procedures performed with the daVinci Surgical System are resulting in faster surgeries, reduced length of hospital stay and less pain post-surgery, and quicker recovery.

Free Flu Shots

Each year in the United States, more than 200,000 people are hospitalized from flu complications—and nearly 36,000 people die.  One of the best ways for Barnes-Jewish to save lives and beat influenza is to prevent people from catching the virus in the first place.

For the past three years, through a grant from the President’s Fund, Barnes-Jewish Hospital pharmacists have dispensed free-of-charge flu shots to people in the community.  In fall 2009, they provided 35,000 flu shots at Barnes-Jewish, malls, churches, and neighborhood centers.

The Center for Diversity and Cultural Competence

Established by a $1.56 million grant from the President’s Fund in 2006, the Center is dedicated to building and enriching a culture of inclusive, patient-centered care at Barnes-Jewish.

The Center offers programs such as the BESt Summer Pharmacy Institute, 24-hour-a day Refugee and Interpreter Services, and the Residents and Fellows Diversity Initiative to reduce health disparities, raise cultural awareness, overcome language barriers that can interfere with diagnosis and treatment decisions, and enhance the diversity of medical residents and other healthcare professionals at Barnes-Jewish.
