Please note: If you are a college or high school student, do not complete the adult volunteer application. Instead, please follow the student volunteer application procedure listed below under Types of Volunteers > College Students. Thank you!

Because Barnes-Jewish Hospital’s mission is to provide exceptional care, we are always looking for volunteers who want to help others. Our volunteers are an important part of the care team, and they help not only patients and families but also the people who care for our patients. We offer opportunities for meaningful experiences and the chance to make a difference in people's lives. Most volunteer opportunities are Monday through Friday during business hours. A limited number of evening opportunities are available.

Our volunteer activities include:

  • Helping patients and families navigate our campus
  • Welcoming patients arriving for treatment
  • Providing assistance on patient care floors
  • Supporting administrative offices in the hospital

Becoming a Barnes-Jewish volunteer is easy. Follow these four steps:

  1. Complete the online application.
  2. Submit references once we receive your application.
  3. Participate in an interview.
  4. Participate in orientation.

Volunteer candidates typically complete the process in a few weeks.

To become a volunteer at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, you must:

  • Commit to one year of volunteering. We ask college students to commit to two semesters.
  • Complete the application process.
  • Attend new volunteer orientation.

Volunteers for the Summer Teens Program or High School Community Service must be at least 16 years old. All other volunteers must be 18 or older.

Barnes-Jewish Hospital does have a nursery, but volunteer opportunities are limited. We recommend applying to volunteer at St. Louis Children's Hospital if you are passionate about helping pediatric patients.

Once you complete the application process and we’ve accepted your application, you will complete the new volunteer online orientation. Orientation topics include Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines, safety, volunteer standards, and working with patients.

The application process, which includes a background check and orientation, may take up to a month to complete.

High school students ages 16 and older qualify to volunteer in our High School Community Service and Summer Teens programs. Both programs immerse teens in a hospital setting and offer exposure to a variety of health care careers. Program participants volunteer through their high school and receive community service credit hours.

Summer Teens students must enroll for at least seven weeks for a total of 60 hours. We allow no more than three absences. All absences must be reported in advance to the site volunteer supervisor and volunteer coordinator. Volunteers must log hours weekly either by VicTouch or VicNet. We will provide a letter verifying service of 60 hours or more up to two years after a volunteer becomes inactive. We start accepting applications in February. The deadline to submit to the Summer Teens Program application is April 1.

Community Service hours are available throughout the school year based on availability. Please contact Volunteer Office for more information.

Students interested in beginning the application process should call 314-362-5324. We will send you an application packet. All information must be completed and submitted at one time.

If we fill all positions, we can place you on a waiting list and contact you when a spot opens.

Undergraduate students should use the college application. Graduate students should apply using the adult application.

The Summer Teens application deadline is April 1.

College Student application deadlines:

  • Fall: Open enrollment June 1–Aug. 1 based on availability. All accepted candidates must begin volunteering by the second Friday of September.
