Musculoskeletal Oncology Team

Specialty-trained orthopedic oncologist provides diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant bone tumors and perform limb salvage surgery of the extremities.

Regis O'Keefe, MD, PhD
Dr. O'Keefe is the Chairman of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine. He focuses his practice in musculoskeletal oncology in adults and children, as well as adult reconstructive surgery of the hip and knee. Special interests include management of benign and malignant bone and soft (connective) tissue tumors in children and adults, bone infections, skeletal reconstruction, curettage of bone tumors and allograft procedures, and primary and revision total hip and total knee arthroplasty.

 Dr. O’Keefe earned his medical degree from the Harvard Medical School and completed his fellowship in orthopaedic oncology from the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1993. In 2000, he pursued a doctorate degree in biochemistry and biophysics from the University of Rochester, School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Douglas J. McDonald, MD, MS, chief of service
 Dr. McDonald is Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at Washington University School of Medicine. A board-certified and nationally recognized orthopedic surgeon specializing in musculoskeletal oncology and oncological orthopedic surgery, Dr. McDonald’s expertise lies in the diagnosis and treatment of benign and malignant bone tumors, Ewing’s sarcoma and limb salvage surgery of the extremities as well as reconstructive surgery of the hip.

Dr. McDonald earned his medical degree from the University of Minnesota in Rochester, Minn. in 1978 and a master’s of science degree in orthopedic surgery from the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in 1982. Dr. McDonald completed both his residency in orthopedic surgery and a fellowship in orthopedic oncology at Mayo Graduate School of Medicine. He also completed an additional fellowship in orthopedic surgery at the Istituto Ortopedico Rizzoli at the Universita Di Bologna in Italy. Dr. McDonald has been listed in America’s Top Doctors.
