Rehabilitation Management of the Acute Stroke Patient through the Continuum of Care

This one-day course is designed to provide an overview of the medical and rehabilitation management of the acute stroke population through the acute, rehabilitation and outpatient settings. Participants will be introduced to a multidisciplinary approach to the management of the acute stroke client including assessment, treatment strategies and available community resources. Information will also be provided on how standardized outcomes can be used to help determine discharge location and prognosis.

Target Audience: PTs, OTs, PTAs, COTAs, and SLPs who provide rehabilitation to the stroke population in the acute, subacute, rehab or home health settings.

8:10-9 a.m. Medical evaluation and intervention from the ER to acute rehab   12:45-1:15 p.m.
The use of prism adaptation therapy for spatial neglect
9-9:45 a.m. Medical and functional prognosis after a stroke   1:15-1:45 p.m.
Use of Vital Stim and aphasia intervention
9:45-10 a.m. Break   1:45-2 p.m.
10-10:30 a.m. PT Assessments and techniques to promote early mobility in the acute setting   2-2:30 p.m.
Vision therapy in the stroke population
10:30-11 a.m. OT Assessments and treatments strategies in the acute settting   2:30-3 p.m. Pulling it all together: key information to guide clinical decision making for people post-stroke
11-11:30 a.m. SLP Swallow screening and intervention in the acute setting   3-3:30 p.m. Community resources for the stroke population
