We offer levels 1 and 2 training and a second-year fellowship to help students earn professional certification as a chaplain. We also offer Certified Educator Candidate (CEC) training to qualified candidates who are called to teach those skills. Our pastoral students are involved in patient, family, and staff care.
Residency program
The yearlong residency program is a 54-week program and includes three units of CPE, usually beginning on the last Monday of August. Barnes-Jewish Hospital has four salaried positions that pay a salary of $39,700. Residents are eligible for employee benefits including health insurance and paid time off, free parking, and a workday $5 meal coupon. Students who have completed this program have gone on to secure meaningful positions in the field.
Summer program
A full-time, intensive summer program beginning in mid or late May running through August provides one unit of CPE. At the successful conclusion of the summer unit, students will have the opportunity to apply for a residency position.
Extended programs
Running January through May and September through December, participants receive one unit of CPE that consists of 300 hours of clinical time in which students visit with patients, plus 100 hours of educational seminars, which may include verbatims, narrative story, arts, individual supervision sessions, case studies, didactics, video related to social location, theology, ethics, end of life, trauma-informed care, and inter-personal seminars.
After a residency year, some decide to become educators and work toward certification as a Certified Educator Candidate (CEC) student supervised by an ACPE Certified Educator.
