A Tribute to Nursing Education

Originally published Mar 2010

“We educate nurses at Barnes-Jewish Hospital because we want the best-trained people taking care of our patients,” says Barnes-Jewish Hospital President Rich Liekweg. Thanks to many generous donors, the hospital can invest in the students who are the future of better patient care, service and outcomes.

In 2009, 236 students of Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College were awarded nearly $579,000 in scholarships from 62 funds—an increase of 36 students over the previous year.  Many of these funds were enriched by generous tribute gifts.
The difference made by honoring or remembering someone special with a gift for nursing education at Goldfarb School of Nursing is profound. Consider just some of the progress made in 2009, a mere two years after the transformation of the program and the hospital’s nursing education facility, Goldfarb Hall:

  • Goldfarb students currently have a first-attempt pass rate for the national nursing licensing exam of 95 percent, compared to the national average of 88 percent.
  • Goldfarb became the first college of nursing in the United States to be approved to offer the Doctor of Nursing Practice and PhD in Nursing program. This degree combines practice and research aspects to create practice scientists – nurse leaders capable of discovering and broadly implementing advances in health care.
  • Goldfarb’s simulation program has been recognized as one of the best in the country by Laerdal—the leading manufacturer of interactive patient simulators for education—and one of the few that exposes students to diverse patient worldviews and cultures before they interact with real patients.

We thank all who help us elevate nursing education, open doors to dreams, and continue a legacy of cultivating outstanding nurses by making tribute gifts that support Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College.
