KMOV – To relieve pain and avoid a total knee replacement, some patients are turning to the Uni-Knee. It is a partial knee replacement that has been around for decades.

The older device is getting a boost thanks to modern technology.

"With the uni-compartmental replacement still removing bone, only doing on other side of the knee. Other aspects the knee joint are left preserved which patients say find provides with more natural feeling knee and probably a better range of motion," says Barnes-Jewish Orthopedic Surgeon Dr. Stephen Burnett.

Dr. Stephen Burnett says advances including pain management, less invasive techniques than total knee replacement. Make making a smaller incision, and avoid cutting tendon and muscles results in quicker recovery time for patients.

Dr. Burnett says with the life expectancy of the Uni-Knee, he hopes patients will avoid total knee replacement in the future.
