ST. LOUIS – Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College was recently honored by the American Assembly for Men in Nursing (AAMN) with the 2013 “Best School of Nursing for Men” award.

The “Best School of Nursing for Men” award recognizes Goldfarb’s dedication to providing a successful nursing education to men by creating a welcoming and supportive academic environment. Goldfarb is the first Missouri nursing school to receive the award.

“The culture of diversity and inclusion was already set before I was appointed dean, but it is a culture that is distinguished from other collegiate settings,” said Michael Bleich, PhD, RN, FAAN, dean of Goldfarb School of Nursing, when accepting the award at the AAMN’s 2013 national conference. “The acceptance of and the creation of more inclusive environments for gender and other forms of diversity will be essential to meeting future health care workforce needs. This is part of the strategic reality for our school.”

AAMN is the nation’s only organization that advocates specifically for men in nursing and for issues impacting men’s health. Each year the AAMN gives their “Best School of Nursing for Men” award to nursing schools based on criteria which includes course content, linkages to male role models, quality of marketing materials, targeted career fairs and local AAMN chapter activities. Along with Goldfarb, Excelsior College in New York and Riverside City College in California also received the prestigious award this year.

The AAMN’s 2014 national conference, expected to reach up to 500 international attendees, will take place at Goldfarb School of Nursing in St. Louis, Oct. 15-17, 2014.

Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College is located on the campus of Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis and is affiliated with Barnes-Jewish Hospital, with a site at Missouri Baptist Medical Center. The College is housed in a nationally recognized educational facility with state-of-the-art classrooms, lecture halls and a Clinical Simulation Institute with six patient simulation labs and two exam rooms providing high-tech, advanced nursing care experiences.

Goldfarb School of Nursing at Barnes-Jewish College is accredited by the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and is approved by the Missouri State Board of Nursing.
