April 5, 2010, ST. LOUIS – With a message of “Together, One Reason” the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine and KSDK/NewsChannel 5 will join forces at the 2010 Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure, Saturday, June 12 in downtown St. Louis for what they hope will be St. Louis’ largest Race Team.

Siteman and NewsChannel 5 have been platinum sponsors of the Race since its inception twelve years ago. By partnering to create a race team, both groups hope to take their efforts to a new level.

With over 3,000 participants, the Siteman Cancer Center is annually one of the largest Race teams, and with wall-to-wall coverage of Race festivities on NewsChannel 5, the word “Komen” in St. Louis is almost synonymous with KSDK.

“KSDK and reporters like Kay Quinn work very hard to increase breast cancer awareness in the St. Louis area,” says Timothy Eberlein, MD, director of the Siteman Cancer Center.  “Partnering with them to bring breast cancer survivors together on this day is a natural fit.”

“NewsChannel 5 and Siteman have been partners with Komen from the very beginning here in St. Louis,” said Lynn Beall, president and general manager of KSDK.  “With our partnership, joining together in creating a race team makes perfect sense.  We hope this new effort succeeds in not only creating the largest race team, but more importantly, helps continue the fight we all want to win - the one against breast cancer.”

With over 66,000 participants in 2009, the Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure has become one of the largest one day run/walks in the United States.  The incredible participation by St. Louisans at the Race plays a major role in breast cancer outreach and education at the Siteman Cancer Center.

Last year, the Race raised nearly $3.25 million in net proceeds with 75% of that staying in the St. Louis area to fund education, screening and treatment programs for the medically underserved.

Those dollars are integral to several programs including:

-Siteman’s program providing breast screening at no cost to over 2,000 underserved, uninsured and low-income women.

-The Daylight Project, screening and educating immigrant and refugee women in St. Louis

-The Navigator Project, addressing the needs of underserved women

The Siteman Cancer Center/NewsChannel 5 Race Team is listed as team number 10037.  Visit http://komenstlouis.org/goto/sitemanksdk to register. Registration is $25 while for timed runners registration is $30.  The deadline for registration is May 22.
