From KSDK-TV, April 5, 2005

(KSDK) - It used to be known as fibrocystic breast disease. But the name has changed because so many women have it. It''s now called "fibrocystic change," and symptoms include breast lumps and bumps along with tenderness.

A viewer wants to know if it can lead to breast cancer.

"The number one concern of every patient who walks in the breast center is cancer and they''re worried they''re going to get breast cancer," explains Dr. Jill Dietz, a surgeon at the Siteman Cancer Center.

But just because you''ve found a lump, doesn''t mean you''ve found cancer.

"Sometimes I see a patient come in with breasts that are like a bag of marbles very lumpy very painful," says Dr. Dietz.

That''s usually fibrocystic change. It''s the single most common condition seen at the Breast Health Center at the Siteman Cancer Center. So common it''s considered normal in pre-menopausal women.

"No one knows the exact cause of fibrocystic change. It can be from stress, it can be from too much caffeine, it can be from hormone changes."

Hormones are believed to be a direct influence, because fibrocystic change usually goes away once a woman goes through menopause. There is no connection between fibrocystic change and breast cancer.

"Fibrocystic change, in and of itself, even if it''s found on a biopsy, does not increase a woman''s risk for cancer."

But Dr. Dietz strongly recommends women get regular mammograms and do monthly breast self-exams, "The first thing is to know what you''re breasts feel like."

That way, you''ll be able to notice new lumps versus the ones that are always there.
