ST. LOUIS - Some may say 13 is an unlucky number, but for those who will be in downtown St. Louis on June 11, the number takes on a special meaning.

That’s because 2011 marks the 13th annual Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure and after a 2010 event where over 71,000 people signed up to participate, it’s expected to be an even bigger event this year. That’s thanks in part to many St. Louis organizations who create large teams with thousands of participants.

One example is the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine, which for a second year in a row is partnering with KSDK-TV for the Siteman Cancer Center/NewsChannel 5 team. With a message of “Together: One Reason,” the goal is to eclipse the over 4,000 people who joined the team in 2010.

“We are expecting 2011 to be the most successful year yet for the Siteman team with an unbelievable turn-out,” says Angela Benassi, co-chair of the Siteman/NewsChannel 5 team and marketing senior coordinator.

The past three Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure events have each raised over $3.2 million that have been critical to the St. Louis area in the breast cancer research, education and outreach arena.

“We would not be able to do much of the outreach we do were it not for the Komen race,” says Susan Kraenzle, RN, manager of the Joanne Knight Breast Health Center at the Siteman Cancer Center. “Their help is essential.”

For example, Komen dollars fund a Siteman Cancer Center program called “Navigating the Safety Net: Paving Smooth Pathways to Care For Underserved People” provides screening mammography at no charge to more than 3,200 underserved, low income people in all counties served by the Komen St. Louis Affiliate.

“What we hear time and again from women who contact us is that they lost their insurance with their job and they wouldn’t be able to get a mammogram if it wasn’t for this program,” says Kraenzle.

Of the net proceeds raised locally from the Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure, a minimum of 25% goes to national breast cancer research and up to 75% stays in St. Louis to help organizations provide breast cancer education, screening and treatment programs.

None of it would be possible without the 70,000 plus who race for a cure.
