Siteman and KSDK/NewsChannel 5 Partner on Cancer Prevention Campaign

ST. LOUIS – As part of their continuing efforts to increase cancer prevention awareness in the St. Louis community and across the region, the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine will unveil a new, 10-month prevention campaign with KSDK/NewsChannel 5 called “8 Ways to Prevent Cancer.” The campaign will debut Tuesday, March 8 during KSDK’s 6 p.m. newscast. 

The “8 Ways” are science based recommendations from the Siteman Cancer Center’s prevention team, led by Graham Colditz, MD, DrPH, professor of surgery and medicine and associate director of prevention and control at Siteman. The “8 Ways” come from Siteman’s evidence-based risk assessment tool “Your Disease Risk,” a free website at www.yourdiseaserisk.wustl.edu for the public to gauge their own cancer risk. 

“That’s the important difference between the ‘8 ways’ and many ‘health tips’ you might see,” says Kate Wolin, ScD, behavioral epidemiologist on Siteman’s prevention team whose research focuses on cancer prevention and control. “We’re using science to build science.” 

The campaign features three main elements: 

-A weekly “8 Ways” feature with KSDK health reporter Kay Quinn, where she will answer viewer cancer prevention questions every Tuesday at 6 p.m., Wednesday during “NewsChannel 5 at Noon” and Saturday during KSDK’s 9 a.m. newscast. 

-A monthly “8 Ways” segment produced by Siteman Cancer Center on different aspects of cancer prevention, airing every other Thursday during “NewsChannel 5 at Noon.” 

-Monthly call-in and online chat segments with cancer prevention experts at Siteman Cancer Center. 

The campaign stems from a successful partnership in 2010 between Siteman and KSDK on a Komen-St. Louis “Race for a Cure” team that was over 4,000 people strong. 

“KSDK makes a superb partner with us on this campaign”, says Timothy Eberlein, MD, Siteman Cancer Center director. “We hope that this partnership will help us educate patients about new ways to prevent cancer. Together, we can make a huge difference in our community and this region.”
