Ronald G. Evens, MD, president of Barnes-Jewish Hospital, will receive the 2004 Leadership Award from the Missouri Chapter of the American Liver Foundation (ALF) at organization''s "Bid for Life" dinner and auction Feb. 21 at the Ritz-Carlton in Clayton.

Jeffrey Crippin, MD, medical director of liver transplantation at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and associate professor of medicine in the Washington University School of Medicine division of gastroenterology, is chairing the event with his wife, Nancy Crippin.

Organizers hope the "Bid for Life" event raises more than $100,000 to fight liver disease, a growing epidemic in this country. Dr. Crippin is a nationally known specialist in the treatment of liver disease, especially hepatitis C – the leading reason for liver transplant. An estimated four million Americans are infected with hep C and many of those don''t know it, according to Dr. Crippin. Without adequate treatment, many of these people will develop chronic liver disease.

"Bid for Life" will also feature Rich Ramirez, New York comedian and liver transplant recipient. Ramirez was diagnosed with a rare bile duct disease as a teenager, and received a transplant in 1997. He has starred in the long-running New York Latin dance musical "Latin Madness" and appeared in the movie "Punchline" and television shows such as "Law and Order" and "The Apollo Comedy Hour."

He also performs a one-man show about his transplantation experiences called, "You Want a Piece of Me?"

Larry Connors, KMOV-TV news anchor and host of a daily news show on KMOX-AM, will emcee the event. William H. Danforth, MD, chancellor emeritous of Washington University, is the honorary co-chairman.

The ALF is the leading, national voluntary health organization dedicated to preventing, treating and curing hepatitis and other liver and gallbladder diseases through research, education and advocacy. Liver disease affects 25 million Americans and is the seventh leading cause of death in the US.

Dr. and Mrs. Crippin are active ALF members. Dr. Crippin is a board member of the Missouri Chapter of the ALF and chairman of the public policy committee of the American Society of Transplantation, working with members of Congress and the adminstration to optimize the lives of those with chronic liver disease and organ transplants.
