ST. LOUIS — Barnes-Jewish Hospital and our physician partners at Washington University School of Medicine are once again listed among the nation’s elite medical centers in U.S. News & World Report’s annual list of “Best Hospitals,” and are again ranked No. 1 in both the St. Louis metro area and Missouri.

For the 21st straight year, Barnes-Jewish earned honors as part of the newsmagazine’s “Honor Roll,” ranking 15th nationally while ranking in 15 individual specialties. Overall, Barnes-Jewish is one of only 18 hospitals out of the nearly 5,000 evaluated by U.S. News to earn a spot on the “Honor Roll.”

Fewer than 150 of the almost 5,000 hospitals performed well enough to rank in even one of 16 specialties such as cancer and urology. Barnes-Jewish was ranked in 15 of the 16 specialties. By individual specialty, Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine rankings are:

  • Pulmonology — 8
  • Nephrology — 12
  • Ophthalmology — 12
  • Neurology & Neurosurgery — 13
  • Ear, Nose & Throat — 14
  • Psychiatry — 14
  • Rheumatology — 14
  • Gynecology — 15
  • Urology — 15
  • Cardiology & Heart Surgery — 17
  • Diabetes & Endocrinology — 19
  • Orthopedics — 19
  • Cancer — 21
  • Gastroenterology — 23
  • Geriatrics — 24

The rankings have been published at http://health.usnews.com/best-hospitals and will appear in print in the U.S. News Best Hospitals 2014 guidebook, available in bookstores and on newsstands August 27.

“Only an elite few of the hospitals evaluated in the country can say they are on the Honor Roll,” says Rich Liekweg, BJH president. “We are truly proud of our Washington University physicians, our caring nurses and all the members of our Barnes-Jewish team for all they do to ensure patients from St. Louis and beyond have one of America’s best hospitals right here in our community. They are truly national leaders in medicine.”

The methodology U.S. News uses to rank 12 of 16 specialties is based on a mathematical model combining reputation, mortality rate, patient safety, and care-related factors such as nursing and patient services. Four remaining specialties – ophthalmology, psychiatry, rehabilitation, and rheumatology – are ranked solely based on their reputation among specialists.
