On Oct. 1, Tsuyoshi Kaneko, MD, was named the Shoenberg Professor of Surgery and chief of cardiac surgery at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and Barnes-Jewish Hospital.

Dr. Kaneko comes from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and served as the surgical director of the Structural Heart Program, director of Aortic and Endovascular Surgery and director of Clinical Outcomes Research.

“Dr. Kaneko is a leading cardiac surgeon, with expertise in transcatheter therapeutics, minimally invasive cardiac, aortic and robotic surgery,” Dr. Ralph Damiano Jr, MD, division chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery, the Evarts A. Graham Professor of Surgery said. “His outstanding clinical, research and leadership skills will build on our legacy as one of the top academic medical centers in the world.”

Dr. Kaneko specializes in endovascular approaches, including transcatheter aortic, mitral and tricuspid valve therapeutics and thoracic aortic aneurysm repair, as well as open aortic surgery and minimally invasive and robotic valve surgeries. He is a recognized leader in transcatheter and endovascular therapeutics, having taught courses on the subject worldwide.

His research has focused on outcomes of aortic and valvular heart disease patients, and Kaneko recently participated in the nation’s largest representative study on cardiac surgery outcome disparities.

Dr. Kaneko earned his medical degree from Keio University in Tokyo, Japan, where he also completed training in general and cardiac surgery before coming to the United States. He finished his general surgery training at The University of Texas in Houston followed by his cardiothoracic surgery residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

He was drawn to Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Heart and Vascular Center for several reasons, and the organization’s reputation topped that list.

“The Shoenberg Professor of Surgery and chief of cardiac surgery is a very special leadership role,” Dr. Kaneko said. “Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital are very well-established institutions with a rich history and tradition. In the Midwest – a large area – this is the mecca for medical innovation, and I am excited for this opportunity.”
