Carrie and Gary were both born with cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease causing thick buildup of mucus in the lungs and other organs. In 2000, Gary received a received lung transplant at the Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital Transplant Center. He later became a involved in the Transplant Mentoring Program to provide support for other patients on the transplant waiting list. Carrie received her transplant in 2004. Today, the pair are able to lead active lives.
