When tumors are located deep within the brain, surgeons may not be able to remove them without damaging healthy brain tissue. A new procedure using hyperthermia treatment allows surgeons to target these tumors while minimizing effects on the rest of the brain. Neurosurgeons at Barnes-Jewish Hospital use intraoperative MRI (IMRI) to guide a thin, laser-tipped probe directly to the location of the tumor. The heat destroys the tumor from the inside out.
