When it comes to improving care for patients facing kidney, prostate or testicular cancer, Washington University and Siteman Cancer Center urologic surgeon R. Sherburne Figenshau, MD, thinks small — smaller incisions, smaller cuts and smaller amounts of time inside the body.

Because cancer runs in her family, 54-year-old Lisa Facer had always been diligent about getting annual mammograms. But in 2006, she missed her mammogram as she and her sister cared for her dying mother in Hawaii. In 2007, the company where she was a corporate bond trader was in turmoil — so she missed her mammogram again. In May 2008, Facer lost her job. So with time on her hands, she finally went for a mammogram. On D-Day – June 6 – she got the news she dreaded: breast cancer.

Oncology nurses often care for the sickest of the sick, which can be stressful and emotionally difficult. But every nurse who works with cancer patients shares the common denominator of passionate care for patients, says Christine Rimkus, RN, an oncology clinical nurse specialist at the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine.

To help improve the availability of breast cancer screening, education and research in the St. Louis area, the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine was awarded five grants from the St. Louis Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure®.

The St. Louis Cardinals and Sportservice will offer a limited edition Cardinals hat for the 2010 season with $10 dollars from sales of each hat going to the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine for cancer research.

The NBA’s All-Time Leading Scorer and Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar will host the Barnes-Jewish Hospital Foundation’s “illumination10,” the annual gala benefiting the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine, Saturday, May 15 at the Chase Park Plaza.

With a message of “Together, One Reason” the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine and KSDK/NewsChannel 5 will join forces at the 2010 Komen St. Louis Race for the Cure, Saturday, June 12 in downtown St. Louis for what they hope will be St. Louis’ largest Race Team.

Colon cancer is considered by many physicians to be a preventable cancer.  To get out the message, Siteman Cancer Center is a sponsor of the annual "Undy 5000."
