Edith thought she was too old for a kidney transplant, but her physician at the Washington University and Barnes-Jewish Hospital Transplant Center encouraged her to try. Kidney transplants from living donors lead to better organ function and a higher rate of success than transplants from deceased donors. Edith's son Steven donated his, and says the experience has made him feel grateful for his mother.
