Pediatric Care Transition for Lung Recipients

The transition from your pediatric transplant team to an adult transplant team may cause uncertainty or stress.  In an effort to alleviate concerns and allow our new patients to concentrate on the future, the Transplant Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine provides a program to deal specifically with this transition.

The Barnes-Jewish Hospital Lung Transplant Program began in 1988, one of the first hospitals in the United States with a program fully dedicated to lung transplantation. Since then, we have performed more than 850 lung transplants including heart-lung transplants. On average, more than 50 patients receive transplants yearly, making our program one of the most active lung transplant centers in the nation.

Comprehensive Lung Care with Team Approach
Barnes-Jewish has established and maintained an internationally renowned program that is one of the largest lung transplant teams in the world. We take a team approach to patient care – before, during and after transplantation. Our pulmonary specialists are recognized as pioneers in the development of many surgical and medical innovations that enable them to skillfully care for patients needing transplantation with an unequaled expertise, commitment and passion.

Our adult program follows many of the same procedures and protocols as the pediatric program at St. Louis Children's Hospital in delivering care to patients for the rest of their lives. We want to make your transition from the St. Louis Children's Hospital lung transplant program or any other pediatric transplant program as seamless and easy as possible. We guide you through each step answering your questions and linking you to other resources as needed. The lung transplant team helps patients get their lives back.

"Everything we do is focused on helping our patients have the best quality of life."

Alec Patterson, MD, Surgical Director

In addition to the lung transplant physicians, surgeons and nurse coordinators, patients may interact with other members of our transplant team including dietitians, anesthesiologists, psychologists, social workers and financial coordinators. The entire team is dedicated to helping patients regain their health and guide them along the way.

"Our transplant coordinators are the face and voice of the transplant team, providing information, reassurance and hope, and serving as a direct link to all of us."

Elbert Trulock, MD, Medical Director
