Critical Care Nursing

When the pressure is on, the Critical Care nursing staff at Barnes-Jewish does their best work. A Level I trauma center, we treat hundreds of critical cases every day—each unique—using the most advanced technologies available. You’ll have opportunities to hone and improve your skills, and make life-saving contributions every day.

Our Neuro ICU is one of the nation's largest and most sophisticated neurology intensive care units, treating and researching conditions that include strokes, sub-acute hematomas, neuro-muscular diseases and aneurysms.

Our Medical ICU treats complex conditions that require invasive monitoring, mechanical ventilation, and advanced medication infusions. Medical ICU nurses enjoy the freedom of self-scheduling, and patient care is guided by nurse-driven protocols. Expansions are due in early 2013.

In our Surgical Observation Unit, we provide intensive care for patients undergoing complex surgeries such as kidney transplants, carotid endarterectomies, post ICU liver transplants, major abdominal and hepatic surgeries, and post-ICU treatments.

Our Surgical/Burn/Trauma ICU treats very complex surgical patients and multiple trauma victims, as well as provides treatment for extensive burn patients requiring difficult and intense dressings.

Our Cardiac Care Unit/Overflow Medical ICU works with our top-rated cardiology department to provide mechanical ventilation, complex cardiac procedures, advanced medication infusions, balloon pumps, and treatment for post-cardiac interventional patients.

The Cardiothoracic ICU cares for patients with complex, multiple system conditions, including adult congenital anomalies and heart and lung transplants requiring post-surgical care.  These patients require intensive monitoring and care, often entailing ventricular assist devices, complex cardiothoracic surgical procedures, or advanced medication infusions. The CTICU was the first in the State of Missouri to receive the American Association of Critical Care Nurses Beacon Award.
