LEADERS IN INNOVATION

The vision at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, along with our academic partner Washington University School of Medicine, is to be a national leader in medicine and the patient experience. Realizing this vision requires that we continue to innovate and improve our service. Some recent examples that demonstrate our commitment include:

  • Opened in 2012, the Barnes-Jewish Center for Outpatient Health is a 12-story facility that consolidated and upgraded five clinics previously located in an older building within the medical center. The clinics include:
    • Primary Care Medicine Clinic
    • OB/GYN Clinic
    • Psychiatry Clinic
    • Surgical and Wound Care Clinic
    • Specialty Care Clinic (Dermatology, Ear, Nose & Throat (ENT), Neurology, Neurosurgery, Orthopedic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, Urology)
  • Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine have opened the Alvin J. Siteman Cancer Center in south St. Louis County. The new facility will provide comprehensive outpatient cancer care that is more convenient for patients living in south St. Louis County and the surrounding area.
  • Creation of the Patient Experience Department -  dedicated to improving the patient experience at Barnes-Jewish Hospital, this team helped launch our BJC values and behaviors and has focused on our patient experience data in new and insightful ways. As a result, Barnes-Jewish Hospital team members have a better understanding of their role in delivering excellent an patient experience every day.
  • Barnes-Jewish Hospital and Washington University School of Medicine were among 23 sites in the United States who participated in the nationwide PARTNER (Placement of Aortic Transcatheter valves) trial. This procedure enables surgeons to replace the heart’s aortic valve via needle-puncture of the skin rather than requiring a more invasive surgery. As a result of the trial, FDA approval for the procedure was granted in November 2011.
