Radiology Careers

Picture yourself working with the most advanced digital imaging equipment available; or learning the latest multi-slice CT scan techniques; or conferring with one of St. Louis’ most seasoned surgical teams, using the latest in diagnostic tools to help them make life-changing decisions.

The Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Barnes-Jewish Hospital pioneered many radiological milestones including work on 3-D treatment planning for cancer, and became the first in Missouri to combine PET and CT scanning. You’ll be working with an organization on the leading edge of diagnostic radiology. In fact, our radiology department is regarded as one of the top five in the United States, and performs over 453,000 diagnostic imaging examinations annually.

BUILDING ON A HISTORY OF FIRSTS

We are widely recognized for pioneering many leading-edge advances in radiology, including digital imaging, body and neuro interventional techniques, and highly advanced CT and MRI clinical studies. Our highly trained specialists are continually collaborating on new and unique imaging procedures and therapeutic interventions.

The institute provides a full spectrum of diagnostic procedures. Jobs are available in:

General Diagnostic Radiology
The general diagnostic staff performs all types of chest, musculoskeletal and abdominal imaging in a variety of settings, including trauma in the ED, intraoperative studies, and portable exams at the bedside. Our digital imagers and computed radiography systems allow for 100% digital imaging throughout the hospital.

Musculoskeletal Radiology
This team of imaging technologists performs a high volume of orthopedic examinations utilizing computed radiography as the principle imaging technique.

GI/GU
Utilizing some of the latest advances in digital radiography, members of this work group specialize in performing a comprehensive variety of gastrointestinal and genitourinary exams.

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
MRI continues to be a rapidly growing modality that is heavily utilized to diagnose bone, soft tissue and vascular disease through multi-planar, three-dimensional image acquisition and review techniques.  Our advanced approach allows us to perform a vast array of clinical research studies, including such highly specialized exams as cardiac and breast MRI, plus the latest techniques in dynamic perfusion imaging.

Interventional Radiology
Working side-by-side with radiology nurses and world-renowned radiologists, the technologist members of this highly specialized team perform vascular and interventional procedures including most angiographic studies, percutaneous gastrostomy placements, and many minimally invasive nonvascular interventions.

Neuroradiology
Neuroradiology technologists perform specialized imaging procedures of the central nervous system. This group of pioneering neuro-interventionalists, technologists and nurses has led the field in perfecting minimally invasive techniques such as embolization of cerebral aneurysms (coiling), stent placement, and thrombolysis, utilizing the latest in bi-plane digital imaging equipment.

Nuclear Medicine/Positron Emission Tomography (PET)
Nuclear medicine technologists perform the full spectrum of exams including dual isotope cardiac scanning, general nuclear medicine imaging, and bone density procedures. Our technologists also rotate to the PET imaging center and perform both clinical and research studies. The department features four recently purchased imaging cameras, plus a new PET-CT combined scanner. Research protocols are varied and are conducted by one of the leading nuclear medicine physician teams in the country.

Ultrasound
Utilizing a fully implemented electronic Picture Archive and Communication System (PACS) and some of the most technologically advanced ultrasound equipment, sonographers perform a comprehensive range of abdominal, musculoskeletal, and vascular examinations. They are supported by world-renowned ultrasound radiologists who oversee a strong clinical and research program.

Computed Tomography (CT)
CT continues to be on the leading edge of research discoveries in radiology. This subspecialty area contains 11 CT scanners, several of which, when first installed, were the first of their kind in the USA. Barnes-Jewish was the first hospital in the country to have two scanners sited in its emergency department. By continually performing such pioneering procedures as CT angiography, virtual colonoscopy and endoscopy, and being acclaimed for its renowned three-dimensional post-processing imaging techniques, the CT imaging section continues to distinguish itself as a global leader in the field of cross-sectional imaging.

It’s a fast-paced environment, where change is routine. Our staff rotations mean you’ll gain exposure to more clinical areas, and work with different teams of specialists every day. It's the type of empowering environment that inspires tremendous professional growth.
